An open day was organised at the TeesRep site which was attended by Anna Turley and members of Redcar and Cleveland County Council on the 28th April. Presentations were led by David Thorman UK Deputy Director for Tecnicas Reunidas and Ben Ellsworth the CEO of MGT Ltd.
Following her visit, Ms Turley stated:
“I recently visited the MGT construction site, a huge investment in Teesside and a real statement of confidence in our area and our people. I am really pleased to see MGT have made a firm commitment to use local labour and local supply chain businesses and have signed an agreement with the trade unions to pay national Blue Book (NAECI) rates.
“I am absolutely clear that these are the kind of commitments to local people I want to see from all major projects in our area.”
MGT in partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Council and FROG (Future Regeneration of Grangetown) have established a Construction Training and Employment Hub in Grangetown.
MGT funded the full time post for a ‘Routes to Employment Coordinator’. Kim Jameson, who was appointed to the post in February 2017, along with an apprentice, will work closely with all the partners to coordinate training and recruitment to maximise the support available to residents.
Kim is based in Grangetown Neighbourhood Centre on Bolckow Road. Grangetown was chosen because of its proximity to MGT's Teessport project and additionally because the Grangetown community has the highest levels of unemployment in the Borough.
Six information sessions were held at the Grangetown Centre in the first two days of opening with over 150 residents attending. Over 600 have now registered with the Centre, which is running construction related courses including fork lift truck, SIA, CSCS, site safety, stand by fire, confined spaces etc.
The Borough’s Working Together Partnership, which includes Routes to Employment, Coast and Country Housing, the four local Job Centres, Redcar College, TTE, People Plus, Triage, APM and Groundworks Trust have thrown their support behind the project and are all attending the centre to engage residents and offer packages of support.
MGT has also been involved in job fairs and subcontractor events in partnership with the contractor for the site, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and ECI. Other events are planned during the course of 2017.
The MGT team and Samsung C&T / Técnicas Reunidas (the principal contractor) will be presenting in an event organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to local companies on the 14th December 2016 on how to become a supplier to the project.
Local companies can learn how the project will be sub-contracted, receive an overview of the project, how to pre-qualify, and participate in a Q&A session.
Registration is free, please register at this link: http://www.the-eic.com/EventDetail.aspx?dateid=1654
We are looking forwards to meeting you there!

Thanks to everyone who attended the MGT and Samsung C&T / Técnicas Reunidas presentation last week, kindly organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and the EIC.
The event was oversubscribed with over 190 attendees. Samsung C&T / Técnicas Reunidas gave presentations aimed at sub-contractors interested in bidding for contracts on the construction of TeesREP, along with details on the pre-qualification process and the timetable for the letting of specific sub-contract packages was provided.
Ben Elsworth, CEO of MGT Teesside and Margie Oliver of Redcar Council were also speakers. Margie highlighted the assistance that the local authorities were able to provide in funding apprenticeships and training & advice on completing tender submissions.
Monday gave MGT Teesside the fantastic opportunity to participate in the Jobs Fair held by Redcar council at the Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart. MGT Teesside was joined by our principal contractor consortium members Samsung C&T and Técnicas Reunidas (TR), and, supported by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council with their Routes to Employment program.
At least 600 jobs will be generated during the construction phase and 100 during operations, with numbers on site ramping up over the course of the next year. Jobs will mainly be through sub-contractors which the principal contractors will award as the project progresses. It’s a high priority for MGT, TR and Samsung to ensure that local people and companies have the opportunity to work on this project, and attending events like this is a great way to help us achieve that.
You can also send your expressions of interest (including your CV if interested in employment) directly to TeessideBiomass@tecnicasreunidas.es. CVs will be passed to relevant sub-contractors once awarded.
There was a great turnout of talented people interested in the project and we would like to thank everyone that attended. If you are interested in opportunities you can contact the local council through their Routes to Employment program as they will have all the details of upcoming contracts.
